Reducing your energy usage is essential to save on electricity, and it’s easier than you may think. Read our simple guide to learn more about your home and how you can help lower your footprint and your spendings.

Appliances

If it’s not in use then switch it off! Leaving appliances on standby still consumes energy. It’s the easiest trick to save money once you get in the habit of turning everything off at the power point. Appliances on standby use up to 10% of electricity in an Australian home.

Buy appliances with a high energy Star Rating as they use 10-50% less energy and water. While you’ll pay more initially, you’ll save significantly in the long run.

Fridge & washing machine

Though they’re appliances, they need a whole section of their own because of the energy they use.

If your washing machine is worse for wear then fork out for a new one, as old ones are less energy and water efficient. Always opt for a front-loading washing machine, they use up to 50% less energy and 40% less water than top loaders. Remember to only put a load on if it’s full, washing a couple of t-shirts uses the same amount of energy as washing your whole clothes basket.

Keep your fridge and freezer clean, and well ventilated to shed excess heat. Ensure there’s space at the top, back and sides so that air circulation isn’t obstructed from crowded food items. Also, make sure that all of the seals are in working order so that your fridge stays dust free.

Heating & cooling

Clean your air-conditioner filters regularly so that it works efficiently and saves energy usage. Also, try to keep your air-conditioner as close to the outside temperature as you can manage. Every degree can make a big difference to your electricity bill.

Double-glaze your windows to reduce heat gains and losses by 40-60%. Having a house that’s cooler in summer and warmer in winter will keep down energy costs. Also, in winter open curtains in eastern and western rooms during the day to naturally heat your home. In summer though pop down the shade cloth in those rooms.

Install solar

Having a solar PV system installed is the most obvious and significant step you can take to reduce, or even make money, on your electricity bill. Reduce your carbon footprint and make your home run off the energy it produces. To ensure you never have to buy from the grid again consider getting a battery so that you keep all of the energy your solar system produces.
